Gabriel Chandelier 2013 | Château de Versailles
The Gabriel Chandelier is the first permanent contemporary piece installed in the Château de Versailles and hangs over the Gabriel Staircase at the main entrance to the palace.
Measuring 12 meters in hight and weighing half a tonne, the chandelier manufactured by crystal brand Swarovski, is composed of 800 crystal modules. These pieces are threaded around a stainless steel skeleton containing a led lighting system.NO. NO NO NO NO NO. I HATE THIS. stupid!!!!! ugh!!!!! this makes me sick! Don’t care what anyone says you will NOT be able to convince me that these new contemporary additions to an 18th century work of art is a good idea. Would we add anything new to the Sistine chapel? No. Just maybe a few extra- no. Would we add anything new to the Mona Lisa? No, honey…. This is child’s play. I think it’s an interesting exploration/experiment but I question if it’s even ethical to introduce a permanent fixture (that is of contemporary style) into a structure that’s centuries old. Same thing that they did with the Louvre (which I also dislike). I think later on down the road it won’t be seen as innovative or clever (because styles will change), but rather annoying and insensitive. It detracts from the artistic perspective of the period, which is so full of history…
