Deed and thought, reality and ideal, success and redemption, strength and goodness—these are forces that will never come to terms with one another. Yet in historical reality it is not the ideal, goodness, or morality that prevails—their kingdom is not of this world—but rather decisiveness, energy, presence of mind, practical talent. This fact cannot be gotten rid of with laments and moral condemnations. Man is thus, life is thus, history is thus.
